Title: STREET BIKE RIDE
Post by: Brian MacKenzie - VP on April 24, 2009, 07:47:27 am
Hey all, I know we are dirt bike club, but I was wondering who has a street only bike? I know Russ has one, I have one and I usally take the summer off to cruise. Is anyone interested in meeting up for a street cruise, like on the coast or through Yosomite?

A friend of mine and I would like to make a coast run, can anyone suggest a good route?

I was thinking about going in the late summer after I recover.  The coast obviously sounds like the best plan in the summer.  I would go with you but I wouldn't want you to freak out about all the laws I break.

What kind of bike do you have?

I'm always down for a street ride.  I hear that Death Valley is a beautiful ride in the summer!  Like my commute to work in the summer.  Seriously though I have wanted to go ride the twisties through the Sierra Nevada mountains for a long time now but the coast is always good.  I am just so used to the heat that I freeze my but off when its below 80 degrees.

Heated gear was one of the best investments I ever made.  It is only too cold when the roads are iced over (and thats only because my street bike is so pretty)

Tami and I got a Goldwing a couple months ago.  A road trip would be fun.

I have a VTX 1300. its good for weekends, but gets a little uncomfortable for any longer, my wife and i try to keep days under 200 miles. We have a poker run here on may 16 with food and fun. Start in Bishop, go through Fish Lake, Montgomery pass, Benton and June lake. here is the link, inyomonoah.org (http://inyomonoah.org) if your interested. I am also planning a trip to Virgina City NV, no date yet.

200 miles?  It will take forever to get to Canada at that rate.

Looks like June 18,19,20,21 for the coast ride (still in pencil). Myself and a friend would ride to Monterey Bay on the 18th, stay the night. Start at the aquirium in the am, goto San Jose and the Winchester house in the afternoon, then back to the coast. Possibly going over the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and then towards Lake Tahoe, then back to Bishop for us.

Need a URAL to make it Canada (see youtube.com for video).

OK, looks like its inked! For me it is Bishop through Yosemite  ;D and on to Monterey Bay on Thursday, 325 miles  :P. Then on Friday AM go through the Aquarium, then if time allows to San Jose for the Winchester House, then on to San Francisco. I already have a reservation at the Holiday Inn Express on Fishermans Wharf, $110.00 a night. Not Bad, but parking is $40.00 a day. I called and the front desk person, she said it is valet only but bikes could park themselves and split the space $. Then over the Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge, past Alcatraz and on towards Lake Tahoe, no reservations, we will wing it and see what happens. Saturday and Sunday have no plans, we will just see what we get into and make it at a minimum to with in an hour of Tahoe. Last day will be from Tahoe area? to Bishop.

Just a disclaimer for anyone interested in joining the ride. I am a Historical Marker whore! I stop at all of them, so my 150 mile rides take all day! If I see something interesting or another route I want to take I go. So if you would like to go great, but be prepared for the trip plan to change at a moments notice or no notice when I suddenly see a sign I need to investigate. Also, don't feel obligated to take my route or follow me somewhere your not interested in going, part of the fun is exploring for me, you may not feel the same way. I cruise at 70ish, the wife hits me vigorously about the head and shoulders if the speed gets up. If you want to just meet up at the end of the day, that's cool for me too. Part of the trips fun for me is NOT having any place to be or any time I have to be there, except the motel I have reservations at.

Yes my wife is going, my buddy and his wife are going and possibly one other guy. The last guy wont know untile last minute in june. It would great to have you both, tell Russ to update with a new bike made for two  :D. Not sure on the poker run, my son is in college and we (dont ask why) are paying for everything, and I mean everything. So money is little tight, we had to cancell the trip to Washington already, just trying to do some small trips on the bike now.

It might not be so bad for you if you met us in Monterey Bay on thursday night, taking lots of breaks and all day to get there.

As of right now, Tami and I will plan on meeting you in Monterey on 6/18.  Where will you be staying?  Should be a hoot!

I will find out today, should be just out side of Monterey Bay. Working on a motel/aquarium combo package, much cheaper. Motel $70.00+$35.00 for each adult for the aquarium or $100.00 for motel + 2 aquarium tickets. I will post what we come up with. It might be a small town just outside Monterey bay called Marina, about 10 miles from the bay.

At this point, I planning on attending the poker run at CB'c place.

He has to clean that bike, so 4 days might be to much for him.

No, the "lead time" to prep the Wing might not be enough! I called him once to go riding on a Tues. or Wed. for the following Sunday. He said, "I haven't touched the bike since the last ride and that certainly isn't enough time to have it ready" And this was AFTER he retired. Anal Brian we call him!

Sandy, Russ and Deanna

Sorry, but it looks like we won't be making this trip.  Time to pay for my previous fun.  After watching my dog about 5-6 times, my sister asked if I could look after hers once.  That will be this coming weekend.  Can't really refuse her one request.  Plus, I boogered up my left foot at RUTS and it doesn't seem to be doing much better.  It's like a living Ink Blot test (I can't spell "Rhorshak") and keeps changing interesting colors.  Guess I'll give in to Tami and go to the doctor tomorrow unless it suddenly heels overnight.  We are both bummed about not going, but want to make one of the future trips.  The "Wing" is feeling neglected .... clean but neglected.

Well we made it back, great trip. caught up with Russ abd Deanna in Marina on thursday night after a ride through Yosemite and then the valley had a few beers and dinner.
Real hot in the valley after 30-40 temps in the mountians. Friday went to Monteray Bay and the aquirium then a ride up the coast in the cold wind. stopped and some small places, looked at light houses and lots of stormy coast, great views. stopped in frisco, I screwed up the reservations for me and my friend, but was able to find a room next door. Walked all over fishermans warf, ate great food saw the sights and ended up at one the bars. the drinks were so strong knocked me on my butt, we had fun. Russ and Deanna had to gop back on Sateeday :-[ we stayed and went to the old fort on the point, crossed the golden gate and the bay bridges and headed to sacramento then onto the 50 and towards tahoe. stayed at the strawberry lodge on the 50, played pool and checkers for shots and home on sunday!

To much to do and not enough time to do it!!!!!

Thanks Russ and Deanna for the great time, wish you could have come over to the lodge, you would have loved it. Next time......

Sounds like a great ride.  Looking forward to attending another one, if I can get an invite (or maybe you can invite Tami and I can tag along).  I promise not to "race"  (my version of faster than normal trail riding, anyway) at least a couple weeks before.  Glad to hear everyone was safe.  Today is the first day I have been able to walk in a fairly normal fashion.  Getting old sucks!!!!!   :'(
