KTM 300 WANTED! (NO MORE)

Well I got to go ahead so I am looking for a KTM 300, preferably an E start.
If anyone knows someone getting rid of a good one, please let me know.
I want to finish out this year on it and get used to riding on two wheels again so I will be ready for next year.

Also, any info about problems with certain years or things to look out for would be appreciated. I was considering a 450 as well but like the idea of a 2 stroke. I miss riding my 250.  

Anyone have an opinion on why I SHOULDN'T go with a 300 and why a 450 would be better? Any input is appreciated.

GOOD to hear your going back to a bike, from someone who has been that route before, two 2 three 2 four and back 2 two.  Could not be happier !!

The only reason I recomend the 4fiddy is to get a street legal one, opens a lot more possibilities, ask Donn, Brian M, myself and more.  Both Sons and I, as well as a few friends have D S bikes, and love them.

Well I am not exactly going back to bikes only at least. At this point, I am planning on racing a bike and a quad next year in the GP series. We will see how it turns out but I am not planning on selling the quad at this point. I will be selling a desert car that I spent about 20K building and used it 3 times! Spent 2 years building it and the 3rd trip I bent a shifting fork and it has sat ever since.

As far as the DS bike, I have never really ridden on the street. I do like the idea of a DS but 95% of my riding would be in the dirt. If I do end up going the 450 route, I would look for one that has a plate. I have also been seeing a lot of people talking about getting their plates pulled by the state since some should have never got them in the first place. They are starting to look closer at it I guess.

Many of those "plated bikes" slipped thru the cracks and even those registered out of state are being looked over very carefully.  get one that is "factory plated" if possible.

I DON"T ride much street and as a matter of fact it scares the Krap out of me, but most dual sport events and the rides we plan use minimal pavement.  Been in 2 accidents on dual sported bikes (LOOOng time ago) and both were under 1 mile from home. Having both a 250 and 450 4 stroke bikes, I like the 450 much better for the power, but the 250 is much lighter feeling and makes it my fav for dez riding.
Pete and Sir Charles and Sandy all have 300's, can't be too bad of a bike.

Thanks for the input Bob. Personally I like the 2 stroke better. I also had a KLX 650 DS that I sold after having it a few years. Never once road it on the street.
It had a ton of torque but I like the power of the 2 stroke better.

I haven't ridden a 450 bike but I know they are pretty good also. My quad is detuned slightly and heavier but I know I wish it had more power than it does. It was alright with stock gearing but desert gearing really sucked the power down.

My biggest concern about going with a 4 stroke again is having to rebuild the top end. My quad is due for a top end and I don't really want to do it myself. I will do a 2 stroke though so that is playing into my decision on what to get also.

And yes, if the Charlie, Pete and Sandy ride a 300 then I am sure I would love it too.

Found a pretty clean 2004 MXC for 2600. Has GPR, FMF and carbon fiber skids. There aren't many out there right now. What do you think?

Anyways, don't be afraid of doing the rebuild on the Quad, NOT much more mechanical ability to tear it down than a 2 smoke, just a timing chain and maybe an oil line to deal with.  Pull the head, cylinder and piston and send it off to your local shop.  YES its more expensive to do the head work that the 2 smoke don't need, but its no major deal.

It's not my mechanical abilities, just don't want to have to deal with sending out parts like the head to have valves redone and things like that.
I have built a few car engines from the ground up. An automatic tranny is one of the few things I would even bother trying.

Waiting on a call back so I can go see it. It looks pretty clean and I found out it is a So Cal member that owns it. He was a senior back in 2006, not sure what class he is now but he said he hasn't really ridden it much in the last couple of years.

An automatic tranny is one of the few things I would even bother trying.

You got more B**** than I, thats the one thing I won't touch, been wrenching for 42 years and I am ASE certified Master mechanic in both automotive and Medium/Heavy duty trucks, Trannies are NOT my cup of tea.

If you go 300 look for an XC the XCW's have big gaps in 4th and 5th gears. The XC you can put gearing on it.

Anyone have some training wheels I can use?  

I ended up buying a different bike than I planned on yesterday morning. I guess I don't enjoy the hunt to much, I just go for the kill. It is a 2005 300 EXC that is fully race ready, full protection,Scotts stabilizer etc. It is in pretty good shape, only about 30 hours, just need some new stickers to make it look pretty. He was a woods guy from back east and had non slide stuff all over the plastics. The real bonus was all the parts that came with it. I got with it about 10 new tires, extra seat, stock pipe with Carbon fiber protector, stock silencer, new piston, new stock plastics, new V force 3 reed cage in the box, new brake pads, lots of jets, new complete gasket set, bunch of oil, spark plugs etc. I think this was a pretty good deal at $2,500. Now is just need to remember how to balance!
